2009 CSS Naked Day

Thursday April 9th, 2009 is the Annual CSS Naked Day. A day where webmasters, designers, bloggers go without css styling to promote web standards and accessibility. So, for 24 hours on April 9th, we will be going without CSS styling. Don’t worry, all the content will still be there, it’ll just look pretty plain.

For more information about CSS Naked Day, visit the Annual CSS Naked Day website for more information.

Great "Remember When…" post on Facebook

Just wanted to let everyone know that there’s a great discussion going on with memories that everyone has, on Facebook. I’ve copied a good chunk of the stories into the forum, but there’s still more discussion going on at Facebook, so I thought I’d put in the link to it.

Kenneth Hamilton – 1936-2009

Ken Hamilton

Ken Hamilton

Kenneth Herbert Hamilton, 72, died suddenly in his home on Friday, February 6, 2009 in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Kenneth was born March 21, 1936 in Geneseo, Illinois, the son of Herbert and Florence Carl Hamilton. He married Elaine Sand November 6, 1954 in the Grace United Methodist Church, Geneseo. They had three children, John, Cindy, and Kathy. He farmed one mile south of Geneseo for several years. Later, he owned and operated Ken’s Skelly and Tire Service and drove a charter bus for Green River Lines. In 1985, he and his wife moved to Monroe, Louisiana, where they operated a 130 room LaQuinta Motel. After retiring from LaQuinta they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he sold real estate, prepared income tax for H & R Block, and was a BOA for Edward Jones.

Early in life, he played soprano bugle in the Black Knights Senior Drum and Bugle Corps in Kewanee. When in Geneseo, he served as Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and was on the Board for six years, Parade Chairman of the Geneseo Music Festival, and Director of the Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from 1973-1981. He received the Knights Hall of Fame award in 1982. He also held all of the offices for the Geneseo Youth Football League and was an active Rotary member. While in Monroe, he was president of the Monroe Hotel-Motel Association.

For the past seven years, he and his wife spent their winters in Pharr, Texas, where he enjoyed golfing and assisted with recycling in their retirement community. He also liked watching shows in Branson, playing cards, tracking his stocks on the computer, and vacationing in Arkansas with his family. He loved to eat, talk with friends and family, and spend time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Green Trails in Chesterfield, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his sister, Janet Nelson, East Moline, Illinois; his daughters, Cindy (Ben) Megli, Sterling, Illinois and Kathy (Doug) Anderson, Creve Coeur, Missouri; his daughter-in-law, Dea Hamilton, St. Charles, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Chad, Steffanie, Michael, and Rachel Hamilton; Joe and Sam Megli; Jessica and Erin Anderson; and one great-grandchild, Seanan Hamilton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John Hamilton.

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Green Trails on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at noon. A visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice in Ken’s memory.

Website Changes

Hi everyone, I think I’ve got everything worked out with the site. I was working on a few changes today and I’m going to go through and tell you about them so you can see what’s going on.

1. The most noticeable difference is the removal of the sidebar/column on the right side of the page. I’ve removed some of the content that wasn’t as important, and condensed it to one column on the left. My main reason for this is that a few pages were having trouble fitting everything into the small middle column. I expanded the main column so that things would fit better. A good example of this is the email list. The chart (which I’m a little behind on updating, I know) didn’t used to all be visible, now it should be.

2. I changed the forum (again, I know, I’m sorry). The forum is more integrated into the site now, no separate login for a different looking website. You can get there by the Forum link at the top of the page.

3. The elements in the left sidebar have changed a bit, so I’ll just mention what they are/do.

a. The first one is the site search, if you’re looking for a specific person, or other info, it works pretty well.

b. The second thing is a donate button, for those of you who would like to help support the Knights website by donating a small amount of money (through paypal, but you shouldn’t need a paypal login to send a payment). Every little bit helps.

c. Then we have the “Meta” section. This part will require a bit more explanation.
The first two links, Register and Log in, allow you to register as a user of the website. You don’t have to log in to view the site, but it makes commenting easier, and you need to register to use the forum. It also allows me to set people as contributors, so that later on, if some of you would like to add your own content, write your own blog posts, etc, we can do that.
The second two links, Entries RSS and Comments RSS, are the rss feed links for the blog/news posts and the comments, respectively. If you don’t know what RSS means, you don’t need to worry about it, it’s useful if you do know though.
The last link, WordPress.org, just goes to the WordPress homepage. WordPress is what I use to manage/run/create the site.

d. Next is the standard weather icon, showing the current weather in Geneseo.

e. Then the pages section, which lists the pages on the site (pretty much the same as what’s at the top of the page.

f. Then the categories section. I try to put every post into a category: reunion news, website news, in memoriam (for Knights and family who have passed away). You can use these links to sort by category.

g. Finally, the links section. This is just a collection of links for general drum corps resources.

So, some new stuff, some stuff that’s been there for a while, but you may not have realized it. I hope you like it, feel free to let me know what you like, don’t like, want to see, etc. either by commenting on this post, or privately by emailing me at scott@knightscorps.org.

Enjoy.

Minor website updates

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know that I’m going to be working on a few minor changes to the website layout. If something looks weird on the site today, just give me a little time, and I’ll be fixed.

DCI Blast from the Past

DCI Blast from the PastI don’t know how many of you get the DCI email newsletter, but every time they send it out, they have a photo of a corps from the past in a section called Blast From the Past. Well, in the most recent one, there was a photo that some of you might recognize, so I thought I’d post it.

Jim "Beast" Wildemuth – 1950-2008

Just received this from Gregg Neuleib:

“Hello everyone, I just found out that Jim Wildemuth passed away. I talked with his father a few minutes ago and they have not made arrangements yet and are pretty shocked. They hadn’t heard from him for a couple days, went to check and found him. My assumption would be that the undertaker would be Stackhouse Moore in Annawan but like I said we don’t know yet. Can someone please let Ken and Elaine Hamilton know as I do not have their email.
Sincerely, Gregg”

–UPDATE–
Arrangements have been made and can be found at the QC Online website’s obituary page.

Also, I’ve archived a pdf file of the obituary here: Jim Wildemuth.
